SAWFA was founded in July 1989 and has since grown to be a fully functioning leading unbrella organisation of water fitness in South Africa. It's main function is the nation - wide training of water fitness instructors.  It also seeks to make the public aware of the benefits of water Fitness and to encourage people to attend classes given by experienced SAWFA instructors.

By exercising in water, all major components of physicl fitness can be improved:

- Cardiorespiratory endurance - maintaining a healthy heart, lungs and improved circulation
- Muscular Strengh - by utilizing the waters resistance
- Muscular Endurance - improving stamina and conbatting fatigue
- Boday Composition - Burning fat whilst building muscle.

Water fitness classes can be attended by:

- Athletes
- Pregnant ladies
- The elderly
- People with diabetes, fibromyalgia, arthritis
- People om weight reduction plans 
- Pre - surgery 
- Post - surgery ( after referral from a medical doctor or physiotherapist )
